Do It Yourself Woodworking Plan: Bird Feeder

Woodworking is not only a fun process to indulge in, but is also a great vehicle to express individual creativity. The amount of woodworking projects out there would be enough to last multiple lifetimes, and a bird feeder is one of the easier ones to get started with. Whether woodworking is a hobby or if it's something that you would to become highly skilled at, beginners should start off with a do-it-yourself woodworking project. This means taking on something simple so you don't feel overwhelmed.
You can choose a very basic bird feeder plan to begin with. Some of the materials required include a dowel, shingles, cedar wood, deck screws, glue, and a window screen. First, you drill the holes so the birds can get access to the feed. Next, drill a hole that is approximately 1-1/4 inches in the center and about 4 inches or so from the base. A smaller hole, about 1/4 inches, should be placed right about the larger one.
The rule of thumb when cutting wood is to measure twice before cutting. If you make a mistake, make sure that you cut a piece too large as opposed to too short; you can always cut off the extra material, but you can't add it back on. Both sides of the feeder can be 1-1/2 x 6 inches, and the front is slightly bigger at 1-1/2 x 8 inches. The next step is then putting all the pieces together.
Once you have all the pieces in place, then you can joint each part together and build out your bird feeder. Next, the sides will be mounted by countersinking two holes in the back; then proceed to glue the two sides to the rear. While applying glue, hold for 10 seconds to be sure that pieces are well attached. Once all the pieces have been put together, pound two nails at the joinings for additional security.
After attaching the front and bottom, then you can add nails. Next, you nail the stake into the bird feeder and lie it on the ground. Then glue the bird feeder and the stake together, and hammer in a few more nails if necessary.
